TIL that the reason lead levels in children’s blood have dropped 85% in the past thirty years is because of an unknown scientist who fought car companies to end leaded gasoline. He also removed it from paint, suggested its removal from pipes, and campaigned for the removal of lead solder from cans.

    via ift.tt

Yep.  It also correlates extremely strongly with an increasing decrease of violent crime.  One of the symptoms of low level constant lead exposure is increased aggression and volatility.

“Unknown scientist”? That was Clair Cameron Patterson.

Gas companies are still so mad at him he’s “unknown scientist”, know his name

Daily reminder that health and safety standards like these are what politicians mean when they talk about “deregulation.”

    Patterson died 5 December 1995.

Petition to make his date of death a Tumblr holiday celebrated by talking about cool shit the gas and petroleum industries don’t want us to know about, and fighting to continue his work.

Happy Clair Cameron Patterson Day! Remember to hold Big Business and our country’s leadership for safety regulation and environmental preservation standards!

y’all the actual reasons behind the January 2025 plane crash where a passenger jet was hit by a military helicopter in DC are so much more fucked up than any of the initial speculations. perfect storm of bureaucratic oversights of known safety issues and compounding risk factors.

this tragedy was a failure of systems and bureaucracies, not individuals

    • air traffic over dc is confined to stay almost entirely above the rivers due to noise regulations, and dc airspace is further crowded due to the no-fly zones over the pentagon and capitol in place since 9/11, which are both near DCA.
    • dc air traffic includes specific pathways followed by helicopters, also over the rivers, with altitude restrictions which theoretically prevent conflicts in flight paths between helicopters and passenger flights.
these helicopter paths have not been updated since the 90s, despite increased traffic to DCA and the other changes to DC airspace post 9/11.
    • in 2023 congress passed the DCA Act, which increased the number of allowed flights into and out of DCA in order to increase access to the capitol, further increasing the amount of traffic in already congested air space.
    • the altimeter in the military helicopter has a known margin of error of +- 100 feet, sometimes up to 130 feet in later testing.
    • the helicopter flight path has a max altitude of 200 feet at the point of collision, intended to keep helicopters below DCA flights.
    • the margin in altitude between the upper bounds of the helicopter flight path and the landing strip approach flight path where the crash happened was only 75 feet.
    • the military helicopter was taking part in a routine training flight to the nearby base where the pilots wear night vision goggles, despite the fact that night vision goggles are less reliable in well lit areas like cities. the night vision goggles also reduced the field of vision of the helicopter pilots.
    • the air traffic control tower was understaffed at the time of the crash.
    • due to the high volume of flights on the night of the crash, flight 5342 was diverted to the shorter landing strip at the last moment on a more difficult approach requiring more focus by the flight team.
    • the helicopter was asked to visually confirm the location of the other aircraft by air traffic control. they mistakenly identified a similar aircraft that was also on approach to landing at a slightly higher altitude. visual confirmation of separation by one aircraft is sufficient per policy.
    • the passenger flight crew never knew the helicopter was there, due to military and civilian flights using different broadcast frequencies, until they saw it two seconds before impact. the helicopter crew never saw the passenger plane that they hit at all.
    • this specific intersection was so dangerous that both helicopter pilots and commercial pilots as well as air traffic controllers had previously reported up to 15,000 close calls where aircrafts were dangerously close. the DCA air traffic control had made approx. 60 reports to the FAA about the danger of possible collisions along these helicopter routes and landing approaches and the high volume of flights at the airport. no changes to any of the relevant policies were made in response to any of these reports.
    • The FAA, under current regulations, does not have to implement any changes proposed by the NTSB upon investigations of crashes like this one or any of the near misses that came before it. The ROTOR Act, S.2503, introduced after the crash and not yet passed in congress (call your reps if you’re in the US), is designed to address some, but not all, of the systemic failure points that led to this event, including mandating that the FAA actually implement changes suggested by the NTSB.

never forget that safety regulations and necessary changes to them are written in blood, even in situations where prevention was possible and people doing their jobs warned of the problems ahead of time.

and maybe avoid flying into DCA at night if you can help it.

Well I asked the host of the community radio station of a small desert town and he said “Don’t let numbers tell you what to do. You are blood and earth, not theory and chalk”, so maybe think about that.

when i was allegedly a woman i was briefly married to a cis guy before coming out as a lesbian and getting a divorce. my now ex-husband, a genuine sweetheart of a man, was very kind about it all and we remain good friends.

twenty-five (!) years later I came out as a trans man.

now. the important thing to know about my ex-husband is that he loves nothing more than 1) horrible puns, preferably bilingual ones; 2) terrible dad jokes; and 3) committing to the bit until the end of time. he absolutely lives for Shenanigans and Japery. i do not know how his long-suffering wife puts up with him, but they’ve been married for more than 20 years so presumably she manages.

so, to break the news to my ex, i texted him. the exchange went something like this:

me: “great news, i’m a trans guy now”

    him: “oh, congrats!”

me: “thank you. now for the better news: I insist you refer to me henceforth only as your ex-husband. do you accept this challenge?”

    and my cis, straight-as-an-arrow, lives-in-the-midwest, married-to-a-minister ex-husband was like

    image

AND HE DOES! gleefully and completely straight-faced, as I understand it. confuses the hell out of everyone, none more than cishet conservative people who’ve known us both for decades and know for a fact he’s only been married twice. I hope he never explains.

    amazing stuff.
